Bachchan Temple Treks Are Disappointing

I used to think that Amitabh Bachchan was a great role model for Indians. But his regular  treks to temples across India are consistently eroding his stature in my eyes.

Ref- Bollywood’s Bachchan walks barefoot to pray

India is anyway full of religious fanatics and superstitious people who would believe and follow so called god men and waste their lives believing in some hocus pocus.

The biggest name in India acting in such fashion only makes things worse. I am sure thousands of Amitabh followers would soon imitate Amitabh and maybe even try to make the idols drink milk!

In today’s India it seems “Science” and “Scientific Temper” are topics meant only for speeches but never for actual implementation.

well i very much agree with ur opinion…but the fact is that when people grow old they need to strengthen thr will power n spirituality n they start finding their peace in god…amitabh bachchan may be a great person for a layman..but he is also a human being like us..one should understand that…he is not god…he also need support from super power…let him do wat he feels like doing

I agree with Vijaya. I think its more of an issue about media encroaching the privacy of an actor.. Whatever the star does is projected as something big/ extraordinary… For all we know, he might be doing this as a tradition since ages – just coming into limelight now !

So im not if the star has to be blamed or Star + (The new channels)..

there are two angles to this…
if he is doing this because he genuinely believes in it… then just because he is a celebrity, we cant deprive him of doing things he believes in..
but if he is doing all this for the sake of publicity… ahead of his forthcoming films, then its surely a stupid thing to do…

He certainly has the right to take up these temple visits. I am not questioning that.

I am disappointed because I do not think that’s the right thing to do for anybody, celebrity or not.

And anyway Bachchan isn’t just a celebrity, he is a role model. A role model doing such things only makes things worse.

    Hi,

I think Harshad you are mixing up two issues. One is being spiritual and believing in God and another is about visiting temples.

Belief in God is an entirely personal issue and a person cannot be criticized for being a believer. However I do agree that beliefs such as “only by visiting a particular temple and praying to a particular god will I gain some brownies points with God” are certainly questionable.

One can be god-fearing by simply praying in one’s home or wherever. In the case of Amitabh Bachhan, being the celebrity he is, he can certainly avoid the hulabaloo that follows each temple visit of his. If he prays within the confines and privacy of his home, will he be less spiritual?

He might be a better example if he instead promotes the idea that God resides within each of us.

I’m diverting from the topic but this is for the pious people – In the Ardh Kumbh Mela, three crores of our people bathed in the Ganges – they might have washed themselves of their sins, but what about the poor Ganges?

We should not get so carried away in our quest for spirituality that we pollute the beautiful gifts of nature so essential to our survival.. air , water , soil and other living creatures.

Regarding this issue I think that the real problem lies with media. Our media is still in infancy stages and just for selling more copies of papers/tabloids, increasing the viewership, these guys are making news out of everything. A recent example of this is Angelina Jolie’s visit to Pune for a shoot. One news was sufficient but every newspaper moulded themselves in Tabloid and started printing stories about her on front page. I think the same case is happening with Amitabh Bachchan.

I feel religion is a strictly personal matter. No one else has the right to decide whether Amitji should or should not visit a temple. How does it matter to anyone else in this country whether he visits a temple? Its a waste of time discussing this and the youth should concentrate their energies on better things.
