Savarkar has to be one of the most intriguing icons of India. An icon you can’t possibly categorize as black or white. Savarkar has to be the grey icon of India. Continue reading “Savarkar – The Grey Icon Of India”
I picked up a copy of the first issue of Life365 today morning and I liked what I saw. So this quick post about the new Pune daily newspaper. Continue reading “First Look at Life365 – New Pune Daily Newspaper”
By studying data over several years, Oak Labs has come out with the following predictions & timetable for Pune Water Cuts (Crisis). This timetable has been drawn up in 2012 but will apply just as well till the year 2019.
Predictions from 2020 onwards were found to be unsuitable for publication, fearing widespread unrest and law & order issues.
You can change the names & tweak the dates for these predictions to apply to any other city in India.
I attended the release of a special issue by Sadhana Magazine titled “Farmers & Agriculture: Experiences & Understanding” on 10th June 2011. The keynote speaker was renowned agri-economist Dr. Nilkanth Ruth. Dr. Ruth hails from Orissa but has been in Pune for over 60 years . He spoke at the event in Marathi. Article 51A(h) of the Indian constitution says: “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to develop scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform“.
However the reality on the ground is that despite rising prosperity and literacy rates, there are no signs of Indians adopting a scientific temper. Orthodoxy, superstitions & pseudo sciences continue to be an integral part of an Indian’s life.
Science is mugged up during exams, and technology is used to earn a living and ease everyday living. However we are a long way from embracing science and adopting the scientific way of logic, reason, critical examination and evidence-based beliefs.
In this talk, I look at a) What is Scientific Temper b) The evolution of the idea of Scientific Temper c) How does one adopt a scientific temper? d) What is the scientific method of Observation, Hypothesis, Prediction and Experimentation e) How we can nurture young analytical minds and pull India out of the quagmire of superstitions and towards a scientific approach to life.
The talk “Scientific Temper : The Forgotten Duty” was delivered at the Takshashila Shala conference held on 29th May 2011 in Pune, India.
Embedded below is a video of a short interview I did with the Oracle Asia Pacific team at JavaOne India, which was held in Hyderabad in May 2011. I answered questions on Java today, Java Enterprise & Java for Cloud Computing.
I also presented a session “An independent, ‘ear to the ground’ report on Java” at the same conference. I will soon be posting an article based on that presentation at IndicThreads.com.
Slideshare has a remarkably twisted way to create an event, add presentations to it and then get a widget with all presentations from that event. I have created many IndicThreads events on Slideshare and yet I struggle with it every time I need to create a new one. I faced the same issues again while creating an events page for our upcoming Cloud Computing Conference in June.
So thought I should at least put up this rather raw post in the hope that it would help someone (including me in the future) facing a similar situation. Also hopefully Slideshare would see this and fix things. Continue reading “SlideShare: How to Add an event, Add presentations to that event & Embed all presentations on your website”
